Phloem loading - Wikipedi
- Phloem loading is the process of loading carbon into the phloem for transport to different 'sinks' in a plant. Sinks include metabolism, growth, storage, and other processes or organs that need carbon solutes to persist. It can be a passive process, relying on a pressure gradient to generate diffusion of solutes through the symplast, or an active process, requiring energy to create membrane.
- Organic compounds produced at the source are actively loaded into phloem sieve tubes by companion cells. Materials can pass into the sieve tube via interconnecting plasmodesmata (symplastic loading)Alternatively, materials can be pumped across the intervening cell wall by membrane proteins (apoplastic loading)Apoplastic loading of sucrose into the phloem sieve tubes is an active transport.
- Phloem loading is specific and selective for transport sugars. Both symplastic and apoplastic pathways of phloem loading are used in plants but in different species. In some species however, phloem loading may occur through both the pathways in the same sieve tube element or in different sieve tube elements of the same vein or in sieve tubes in veins of different sizes

- Phloem (/ ˈ f l oʊ. ə m /, FLOH-əm) is the living tissue in vascular plants that transports the soluble organic compounds made during photosynthesis and known as photosynthates, in particular the sugar sucrose, to parts of the plant where needed. This transport process is called translocation. In trees, the phloem is the innermost layer of the bark, hence the name, derived from the Greek.
Indirect evidence has been obtained for symplastic unloading in storage and utilization sinks. In other sinks transfer to the apoplast may occur, but not necessarily at the sieve element. The phloem is made up of living tissue, which uses turgor pressure and energy in the form of ATP to actively transport sugars to the plant organs such as the fruits, flowers, buds and roots; the other material that makes up the vascular plant transport system.

- High wall permeability would ensure fast phloem transport and an advantage in growth and competition but, during drought, it could lead to mortality via turgor collapse. Fast osmoregulation could also require active phloem loading, which is less energy-efficient than passive, diffusion-driven, loading

Quick convienent flower delivery. Shorten the distance with flowers Phloem loading is nearly ubiquitous among terrestrial plants and must therefore be highly advantageous. However, it is not essential, as demonstrated by the absence of loading in willow. Furthermore, the mechanism of phloem loading—symplastic, or apoplastic, or perhaps a mixture of the two—is not consistent among higher plants Hence phloem loading and unloading brings about translocation. Functions of Xylem and Phloem. Xylem transports water and soluble mineral nutrients from roots to various parts of the plant. It is responsible for replacing water lost through transpiration and photosynthesis

- Phloem and xylem are closely associated and are usually found right next to one another. One xylem and one phloem are known as a 'vascular bundle' and most plants have multiple vascular bundles running the length of their leaves, stems, and roots. Xylem tissue is used mostly for transporting water from roots to stems and leaves but also transports other dissolved compounds

However, very little is known about the intracellular mechanisms that take place.

Phloem transport is assumed to be driven by an osmotically generated pressure differential that is endogenously maintained by sugar loading at source tissues and unloading at sink tissues, as postulated by the Münch pressure flow hypothesis (Münch, 1927; van Bel, 2003; Thompson, 2006; De Schepper et al., 2013) However, phloem loading of small amounts of nitrate was induced by feeding 750 or 1000 mg NO 3 −Nl-1 directly to cut shoots via the transpiration stream. Transfer of reduced nitrogen to phloem was demonstrated by feeding 15 NO 3 to shoots and recovering 15 N-enriched amides and amino acids in phloem sap Phloem loading diagram depicting two pathways for sucrose to enter the sieve element. In path A, sucrose is pumped across the plasma membrane from the cell wall space by sucrose transporters (apoplastic loading).
